Remember, getting to work when we don’t want to is a learned skill. We have to train ourselves to get motivated on command.
Here are the final three motivation busters. Make sure to check out the first two articles in the series if you haven’t already.
- Blow up the little problems – Sometimes a little problem can cause more motivation frustration than a big problem. That little issue of not knowing what page you were supposed to begin on or what margins are required on that research paper can become THE issue that keeps you from getting started. [hidepost]Blow that little problem up into a big one and then get it solved. For example, “I can’t keep putting this off just because I’m not sure which page I’m supposed to start on. I MUST get started within the next hour. I’m going to call Lulu and see if she’s got the syllabus so I can get started. “
- Just do it – Decide on a slogan or phrase, such as “just do it.” Every time your brain starts telling you why you should get started right now interrupt your thoughts with your phrase. Example: “I’m going to get started with this … just as soon as I JUST DO IT.” or “This would be the perfect time to work on my project except that JUST DO IT.”
- Success Inertia – Take note of when you accomplish something and feel the success and sense of achievement. Use that to slingshot you into the next task. This is (yet another) great reason to divide that huge task into small bites. Celebrate upon the completion of each step and let your good feelings carry you into the next step.[/hidepost]
The more experienced I get in dealing with students the more useful I find these motivation tricks to be. I’ve found they work for five year olds just as well as they do for 30-somethings like me.
Print out this series and post it some place prominent. Any time you find yourself in a motivational quagmire, randomly pick one of the techniques and apply it. Just do it!
